This We Believe
Part 8- I have the power of God Living in Me
Acts 1, Romans 6, Romans 8, Galatians 5
Luke Brower, Preaching
When you hear me say “Holy Spirit” what pictures pop into your mind?
What do we know about Him? lf somebody were to ask us to explain the Holy Spirit to them
what are some things we would want to make sure we say?
How would you describe your relationship with Him?
The Holy Spirit is a very interesting and mysterious subject, but there are two things I know that are
foundational to understanding who He is and what He is doing in our world.
#1- He is God
#2- Jesus sent Him to live in the hearts of believers
That means, that as a believer,
I have the power of God living in me
Me…l…have the power of God…living inside me.
The real question is, how can I engage that power in my everyday life?
Article #6 outlines a nice succinct statement focusing on what the Holy Spirit does. Underline all 10
verbs in the statement:
We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ.
He convicts the world of its guilt. He_-regenerates sinners, and in Him they are baptized into union with
Christ and adopted as heirs in the family of God. He also indwells, illuminates, guides, equips and
empowers believers for Christ-like living and service.
There are 2 postures we as followers of Jesus must take in order to engage the power of the Holy Spirit
in our lives.
#1- Wait on Him (Acts 1:4-5, 2:1-3) – Engaging the power of the Holy Spirit starts with waiting on Him
When you hear the word wait what comes into your mind?
The primary issue with waiting is time. Waiting for a moment to arrive when something happens that
changes things from the way they were before into something new. ln Acts 1 & 2 Jesus makes it very
clear that His followers must wait on the power of the Holy Spirit before they move. The fact is nothing
happens in God’s Kingdom if it is not initiated by the Holy Spirit. He does the work: He Glorifies,
Convicts, Regenerates, Baptizes, Adopts. We must put ourselves in a position where we can join Him in
what He is doing, rather than running out on our own.
What is one way you can being to practice waiting on the Holy Spirit?
#2- Walking with Him (Romans 6:3-6, 8:1, 5, 9-15, Galatians 5:16-25) - Once we have slowed ourselves
enough to join Him in what He is doing, our job is to faithfully keep in step with Him. As His initial work
takes shape inside us, He invites us to engage in a journey of following Him. On this journey He indwells,
illuminates, guides, equips and empowers us to engage in Jesus’ Mission. We are called to walk in step
with the Spirit. The question is:
How? What can we do to walk in step with the Spirit?
Acts 1:4-5, 2:1-3
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Romans 6:3-7
Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin- ‘ because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
Romans 8:1, 5, 9-15
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation- but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Galatians 5: 15-25
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
